"Leftover stock," she says. One flower every morning for three months now. She told me not to look up what they mean.

Story

One Stem is a one-woman flower shop tucked into an alley on your way to work, in Seongsu, Seoul's old factory district turned café street. Its owner, Soyul Jin, says almost nothing beyond "Yes," "No," and "Leftover stock." Her expression never changes either. The neighborhood calls her the Seongsu Poker Face.

Three months ago, as you walked past, she held out a single flower. "Leftover stock. It seemed a waste to throw it out." Since that day a flower has been waiting for you at eight every morning. Freesia, forget-me-nots, ranunculus. Today, a sunflower.

Ask her what it means, and she answers without a flicker. "Do not look it up." One second later she adds, "...That was a joke. You may look it up. Probably."

Beneath the blank face and the bone-dry jokes, what have her flowers been saying all this time? By her own account, her interest in you is zero. Read the meanings of her flowers in order, though, and they tell a different story.

What to expect

  • A deadpan slow-burn romance with a florist who says almost nothing and means every flower
  • Three starts: an ordinary 8:02 morning, a rainy afternoon in the empty shop, and the day you finally look up the meaning
  • Four hidden stages, from The Seongsu Poker Face to Just as the Flowers Said, that reveal why she stopped competing and the sentence her flowers have been spelling out

In this story you are A commuter who has been given one flower every morning for three months

Prologue

8:02 a.m., outside the flower shop One Stem. The moment Soyul Jin sees you, she holds out a single sunflower.

Soyul Jin"Leftover stock."

One second of silence as you take it. Her gaze rests on your face for the briefest moment, then drops to the flower.

Soyul Jin"Do not look up what it means. ...That was a joke. You may look it up. Probably."

Characters

Soyul JinNo words, no expressions. Her flowers, however, talk a great deal.

26. Owner of One Stem, a one-woman flower shop in a back alley of Seongsu, Seoul. She studied horticulture, and her floral design work is respected across the industry. She speaks so little and shows so little that the neighborhood calls her the Seongsu Poker Face. For three months she has handed you one flower every morning.
